Chapter 1
Introduction
Unknown Speaker
Hey there, and welcome back to the Pleasant Spirit Podcast. I’m Kyle.
Kelsey
And I’m Kelsey. We’re so glad you’re here with us today. Whether you’re walking, resting, driving, or doing dishes—we love being part of your day.
Unknown Speaker
Today’s topic is one I’ve wrestled with and returned to many times over the years: “The essence of who you are is not based on experience.” That might sound a little abstract at first, but hang with us—we’re going to make it real.
Kelsey
We often define ourselves by our experiences. The jobs we've had, the relationships that shaped us, the mistakes we regret, and the victories we cherish. And while experiences can certainly influence us, they don’t define the core of who we are.
Unknown Speaker
Exactly. Experiences are like clothes we wear or rooms we walk through. But the essence of who we are—the true self—is like the light that shines regardless of what outfit you’re wearing or what room you're in.
Kelsey
So what is that essence? Is it a soul? A spirit? Your energy signature? Call it what you like—your essence existed before you ever had a name, a job, or a heartbreak.
Unknown Speaker
I like to think of it this way: if all your titles, labels, stories, and roles were stripped away… what’s left? There’s still you. A witness. A presence. A being.
Kelsey
I remember when I was younger, I thought my worth came from how “good” I was or how successful I appeared to others. But life has a funny way of showing you that identity built on performance is a fragile identity.
Unknown Speaker
And fragile identities tend to crack under pressure. When life shifts—maybe you lose a job, or someone betrays you, or your body doesn’t do what it used to—it can feel like you’ve lost yourself.
Kelsey
But that’s the illusion, right? The essence of who you are doesn’t leave when your circumstances change. It’s like the sky—it holds the storms and the sunshine, but it isn’t the weather. It’s always there.
Unknown Speaker
I’ve had moments where I felt invisible, or like I didn’t matter, because my external world didn’t reflect my internal value. That’s when I had to remind myself: I am valuable because I exist. That’s it. No achievement required.
Kelsey
Let’s take a breath on that one. You are valuable because you exist. Not because of what you've done, or haven’t done. Not because of what you’ve survived or accomplished. Just… because you're here.
Unknown Speaker
And there’s freedom in that. When we stop chasing identity through performance, we can just be. We can rest. We can choose from a place of love instead of lack.
Kelsey
Some people worry that if they stop identifying with their experiences, they’ll lose their personality or purpose. But it’s the opposite. When you’re no longer boxed in by your past, your real self has space to emerge.
Unknown Speaker
You become more authentic. More peaceful. More aligned with your values, not your history.
Kelsey
You might even notice that the less you define yourself by experience, the more you’re able to see others for who they are, not just what they’ve been through.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, you start to see the light in people—even when they’re messy or wounded or stuck in their own stories. And you realize: “Oh… me too.”
Kelsey
So today, let this be your gentle reminder: You are not your trauma. You are not your titles. You are not your bank account or your GPA or your relationship status. You are more than the sum of your experiences.
Unknown Speaker
You are awareness. You are energy. You are spirit. And your essence is steady, whole, and always worthy of love.
Kelsey
Thanks for sharing this space with us today. We hope this reminded you of your inner light—and maybe even helped you let go of a label or two that you’ve outgrown.
Unknown Speaker
If this resonated with you, share it with someone who might need to hear it. And as always, you can find more reflections and resources on our website, pleasantspirit.com.
Kelsey
Until next time, take care of your energy, and remember—who you are is far more than anything you’ve been through.
Unknown Speaker
We’ll talk to you again soon. Be well, friends.
